Kurt Gerrons Karussell

Mit Ovationen für den ersten Inter­preten des Mackie-Messer-Songs beginnt 1928 der Siegeszug dieses Chansons rund um die Welt. Der Durch­bruch in der Karriere des großen Berliner Enter­tai­ners Kurt Gerron.
Er ist der Magier in Der blaue Engel, wirkt in über 70 weiteren Filmen mit, spielt Theater, führt Regie bei den so beliebten opti­mis­ti­schen Ufa-Komödien. Ein Star seiner Zeit, dessen große Liebe dem Kabarett gehört.
Gerron ist Jude, muß emigrieren, wird inter­niert, depor­tiert, im »Promi­nenten-KZ There­si­en­stadt« gegen das Verspre­chen, mit dem Leben davon­zu­kommen, betraut, den Propa­gan­da­film Der Führer schenkt den Juden eine Stadt zu drehen. Unser Film nähert sich dieser aus dem öffent­li­chen Bewußt­sein verbannten wichtigen Künstler-Persön­lich­keit der zwanziger Jahre durch Zeit­zeu­gen­be­richte, Spiel­film­se­quenzen und vor allem durch die unsterb­li­chen Chansons, die Gerron prägte und in seinem Kabarett »Karussell«, das er 1944 im KZ There­si­en­stadt gründete, noch einmal Revue passieren läßt.

In 1928 the song »Mack the Knife« was performed for the first time. It was received with a standing ovation and went on to become a resoun­ding success all over the world. But this first perfor­mance also launched the career of the singer – the great Berlin enter­tainer Kurt Gerron. Gerron played the magician in Josef von Sternberg’s The Blue Angel; he also appeared in over seventy other films, performed on stage and directed many of the popular, opti­mi­stic Ufa comedies. He was a star, a big name in show business whose first and greatest love was cabaret.
Kurt Gerron was Jewish; forced to emigrate, he was impri­soned, deported and taken to the »concen­tra­tion camp for cele­bri­ties« at There­si­en­stadt, where he was given the assurance that his life would be spared if he would consent to make the propa­ganda film »Der Führer schenkt den Juden eine Stadt«(The Führer gives the Jews a City).
Our film takes a closer look at this marvellous, well-known enter­tainer of the twenties who was banished from common conscious­ness. Included in the film are eyewit­ness accounts, excerpts from feature films and, above all, the immortal chansons that were to become synony­mous with the name Kurt Gerron – and were performed by Gerron once more in »Karussell«, the cabaret he founded in There­si­en­stadt in 1944.
