»Bilder lesend, Worten lauschend führt ein Leser durch die kurze Erzählung ›Gespräch im Gebirg‹, die Paul Celan 1959 nach einem Besuch im Engadin nieder­ge­schreiben hat.
Ein Jude wandert einsam durchs Gebirge. Es ist Nacht und er ist in ein rätsel­haftes Gespräch mit einem anderen Juden vertieft. Oder führt er Selbst­ge­spräche?
Der Film doku­men­tiert eine außer­ge­wöhn­liche Lektüre in einer Mischung von doku­men­ta­ri­schem und fiktio­nalem Material. In der Ausein­an­der­set­zung mit der schwie­rigen, aber auch humor­vollen Erzählung Celans steht die Perspek­tive des Lesers im Mittel­punkt. Der hat sich in seiner Wohnung einge­schlossen und liest die Erzählung laut vor. Seine Rezi­ta­tion begleitet er mit einer Vielzahl von seltsamen Hand­lungen: Er kommen­tiert, illus­triert, insze­niert und expe­ri­men­tiert. Er breitet eine umfang­reiche Sammlung von Bildern, Doku­menten und Video­auf­nahmen aus, die er auf zahl­rei­chen Reisen und in Archiven über Paul Celan und seine Erzählung gesammelt hat.
›Gespräch im Gebirg‹ ist eine unge­wöhn­liche Doku­men­ta­tion und gleich­zeitig eine Ausein­an­der­set­zung zum proble­ma­ti­schen Verhältnis Literatur und Film.

Reading images, listening to words, a reader navigates through the short story ›Conver­sa­tion in the Mountains‹ which Paul Celan composed in 1959 after a trip to the Engadine.
A lone Jew walks through the mountains. It is night and he is engrossed in a cryptic conver­sa­tion with another Jew. Or is he talking to himself?
The film documents an unusual reci­ta­tion of the text using a mix of docu­men­tary and fictional material. In examining Celan’s difficult but at times also humorous story, the perspec­tive of the reader stands in the fore­ground. He has shut himself off in his apartment and proceeds to read the story out loud. He accom­pa­nies his reci­ta­tion with a multitude of unusual actions: making commen­tary, drawing illus­tra­tions, staging of scenes, conduc­ting expe­ri­ments. He inter­weaves an extensive collec­tion of pictures, documents and video segments he has compiled about Paul Celan and his story during his numerous travels and in archives.
›Conver­sa­tion in the Mountains‹ is an unusual docu­men­ta­tion and – at the same time – a contro­versy on the proble­matic relation between lite­ra­ture and film.

Geboren 1962 in Zürich. 1982-86 Studium der Bild­hauerei an der Kunst­aka­demie Düssel­dorf. 1986-89 Studium der Archi­tektur an der HdK Berlin. 1992-94 Studium der Medi­en­kunst an der Kunst­hoch­schule für Medien in Köln.
