Nina Vasi­levnas Lebens­ge­schichte in Kasachstan klingt wie eine Symphonie des Leidens. Ihr Bruder, ein talen­tierter Geiger, beging Selbst­mord. Ihr Vater hatte ebenfalls ein schweres Los. Sie selbst neigt zu Melan­cholie. Zurzeit kümmert sie sich um Tiere. Ihre Erzählung ist im Hinter­grund begleitet von bellenden Hunden, denen es gelingt, im Herzen der Frau etwas Liebe und Wärme zu wecken. Denn Nina leidet an ihrer Fähigkeit, Mitleid und Sympathie für andere zu verspüren. Sie macht ihr Leben reichlich kompli­ziert. Schließ­lich bringen mehr als fünfzig hungrige und auf ihre Hilfe ange­wie­sene Hunde nichts ein. Und Nina muß mit vierzig Dollar im Monat auskommen.

The Kazakhstan Nina Vasi­lyevna’s life story sounds like a symphony full of pathos. Her brother was a talented violin player, but committed suicide. Her father as well had a cruel fate, she herself is also inclined to melan­choly. Now she takes care of animals. Her story is backed up by a choir of barking dogs, that actually manage to arouse some love and warmth in the woman. For Nina suffers from this ability to feel compas­sion and sympathy for others which makes her life fairly compli­cated. After all, more than fifty hungry and helpless dogs yield nothing, and Nina has to get by on forty dollars a month.
